The fixes just reduce the overall "chrome" effect on the hair. The older textures would make the hair extremely bright, almost glowing, from some angles, and extremely dark from others. For the fixed version, the extremeness of the glow is reduced and the actual texture is still the same (it even has a bit higher contrast for more dimension now) and allows you to shade the hair to create contrasts, highlight, and some shine
If you like the old textures, then you may want to make a backup of them if you try the fix because the fix will replace the old textures. Personally, I think the fix is a definite improvement, so I will not be keeping a backup of the old textures.
