Thank you, though I don't know if I'd say that people who create mainstream stuff aren't inspired. I think we all tend to create stuff based on our interests/tastes, and I just happen to have more fringe interests and am fascinated by different subcultures.

But, yeah, I get what you're saying. In general, I don't see the point of having a bunch of different versions of the same thing. So if some kind of CC is extremely popular in the community (or if it already exists and is reasonably well made) then I'd consider it a waste of effort to create a derivative work. I'd rather fill a niche interest that hasn't been serviced yet.
